Gist: Anthony John Russell (born January 25, 1943) was the most recent Bishop of Ely in the Church of England.

Russell was educated at Uppingham School, St Chad's College, Durham University and Trinity College Oxford, where he earned a DPhil. He studied for the ministry at Ripon College (Cuddesdon).

He was curate in the Hilborough group of parishes in the Diocese of Norwich from 1970 to 1973. From 1973 to 76 he was Priest-in-charge of Preston-on-Stour with Whitchurch and of Atherstone on Stour in the Diocese of Coventry. For the next eleven years he was Vicar of Preston-on-Stour and Whitchurch with Atherstone, and also Canon Theologian of Coventry Cathedral. Between 1973 and 1982 he was Chaplain of the Arthur Rank Centre, and Director between 1983 and 1988.

From 1983-1988 he served as a Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II. He was nominated as Bishop of Dorchester in 1987, and consecrated in 1988, before being nominated as Bishop of Ely in 2000. He retired on 28 February 2010.

He has published a number of books, especially on the role of the church in the countryside. Titles include The Country Parson (1993), The Country Parish (1986), The Clerical Profession (1980). He is leading spokesman for the Church on rural and farming matters. He was a member of the Rural Development Commission and was the Archbishops' Commissioner on Rural Areas, and is a Vice President of the Royal Agricultural Society.

RASE President 2004-05. President of East of England Agricultural Society 2007-08. Fellow of Royal Agricultural Societies 2008.

He is on the governing Council of Radley College and is President of the Woodard Corporation (a federation of 44 Anglican schools in the private and maintained sectors).

He was a member of the Rural Development Commission (1991-99). Trustee of the Rural Housing Trust (1983-2006). He is President of the Cambridgeshire Rural Community Council.

He was admitted to the House of Lords in 2007, and left the House upon his retirement.

The Bishop was the visitor of St John's College, Jesus College and Peterhouse. He is an Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College and St Edmund's College in Cambridge, and St Chad's College, Durham.

He writes regularly on rural and agricultural matters for a number of journals/papera including Church Times. He is known as a keen horse-rider.
